Finding Island Contemporary Art

Cruinneachadh Hulabhaig

A small but growing collection of Island Contemporary Art, shared online.

My quest continues...

I’ve been a bit stuck this month, problems with my van have left me immobile. First it was a broken window (foolishly broken after I locked myself out), an annoying slow puncture, noise from my rear wheels revealed a broken shock absorber, duly fixed but now, still noisy, I need the wheel bearings replacing. Doh!

All this has sadly prevented me from visiting Edinburgh to see the much anticipated Mary Morrison exhibition Hidden Journey, 1 - 22 february 2025 at &Gallery, I had hoped to visit the opening and buy a piece for the collection. But this will have to wait.

Another artist I have been researching is Bronwyn Mackenzie. Her work on listening to plants and drawing with wind motion have intrigued me, and I’m hoping to soon include and share one of her works.

This month I’m featuring a work from the collection by Sandra Kennedy. Sandra lives in the remote village of Marbhig in Lochs. A location which Sandra captures beautifully in her abstract work.

Also, despite lack of transport, I managed to visit two exhibitions here on Lewis, the first was Às an Duibhe - Out of Darkness, currently on show at Grinneabhat from 14th January - 7th March 2025.

And secondly Zodiac Journey at An Lanntair, running 8 Feb – 1 Mar 2025. See below...

On a visit to Reothart nan Ealain, a new Gaelic visual arts hub here in the Outer Hebrides, while in conversation with Mairi Gillies its proprietor I was distracted by an artwork displayed to my right, not sure why, maybe my ramblings about our bad summer weather was boring myself as much as Mairi. The work was Aiteal ('Transient view'), when Mairi explained more and revealed the artist was Sandra Kennedy I knew I had found another artwork for the collection. Curiously I think the artwork was more descriptive of our bad summer weather than my ramblings could ever be.

Island Exhibitions

Às an Duibhe - Out of Darkness

Grinneabhat from 14th January - 7th March 2025

A group exhibition from members of the Open Studios Hebrides collective.

Each member responding to the title theme in their own unique personal way.
A fine exhibition showcasing some of the excellent talent we have here on the island, with many works evoking the sense of emerging from the dark winter nights which we all experience here on the island at this time of year.

Zodiac Journey

An Lanntair from 8 February – 1 March 2025.

A Ritual Journey by Jill Smith. Photographed by Mhairi Law.

Jill’s journey through the 12 signs of the zodiac engaged me more than I had expected. My normal disregard for astrology and its questionable study of celestial bodies, were overwhelmed by the very personal and clearly emotional responses that Jill has to her performed ‘actions’ and the deep spiritual and ritual connections she has with the collected items on display....

The Isle of Rust

Alex Boyd and Jonathan Meades

"It’d be easy to mistake these landscapes for ruins. Rust is not ruin. There is in Meades-Boyd some kind of shared attention to the detritus of human life. They open their eyes to the humanity that inheres in what outlasts people’s lives."
Dan Hicks
