Caring relationships and Communication are at the heart of our school

Adults and students alike give of their best if they are listened to, treated warmly and respectfully – regardless of their English language proficiency. We are committed to providing a “no surprises policy” to all – parents, guardians, staff, students at Adelaide International School. Our preferred communication is in person on Level 4, 127 Rundle Mall or by email in English. We ask you to use appropriate software tools to do your own translating or use the services of your family Agent engaged to find introduce your child to our school. We only can provide limited translators at this stage.

How we build relationship through effective communication

Image description

1. We send students, parents, Old Scholars, and friends of AIS a fortnightly newsletter and regular correspondence by email for pertinent events like Graduation, Welcome Morning Teas.

2. Each Home Class teacher and Subject Teacher will send regular emails updating you about expectations to work together to support your child’s learning and progress updates.

3. Home Class teacher is the primary carer of each child. We ask parents contact the home class teacher first. The name of your child’s home class teacher is on their timetable. You can email Kitty Shao on [email protected] if you need help. She is also the one who calls parent/guardian (only who the child resides with) if a child is absent or late.

4. We have Parent Teacher interviews Week 4 – where you provide your own interpreter/agent.

5. We “level” using Australian Curriculum and SACE tools, each child’s English Language Proficiency in our school in Week 1 each semester and Week 8 each term – monitoring student growth data closely and allocating education support as needed for maximum language development opportunities for each child.

6. We prepare a formal written school report distributed electronically on the Wednesday of the last week of each term – sent to parents, guardians, students. Other parties only by advising Mr Shaun Oakey, Deputy Principal.

7. We will acknowledge receipt of your email within 24 hours and work with you to resolve the matter you have raised with us in a timely manner to support your child’s development.

8. We have a new custom-designed student communication DIARY – including key school policies and procedures to keep children safe, give them wellbeing tips each week and embedding goal setting together with strategies improving time management and assessment planning. We are seeking permission to send this electronically to parents of each child. A hardcopy has been supplied for free to each student. It is compulsory they use this diary and have it with them at school in each lesson, as we support the safety on campus at all times. If they lose it, they will need to pay for a new one.
9. We also offer you the following staff contact email list to you, to reach out if you have questions. Do not hesitate to email us in English.

Character, learning and wellness

I am thrilled to be a part of the AIS community and to fulfil my part in supporting your son or daughter on their educational journey here in Australia.

I am fortunate to be part of such an inclusive, forward thinking and culturally diverse school that is committed to developing the character, learning and wellness of every student.  At AIS it is clear that character development plays an important role in each student’s development.  We assist each student to’ know who they are’ and to be future focused.  We help them to see and understand the global challenges that face us while at the same time celebrating the positive achievements that are realised through goal-setting, strategizing, critical thinking, curiosity, helping and serving others and taking time for reflective practice.

As a Geography teacher I am committed to our school doing what it can to educate our young people about the environment and its sustainability.  I am already impressed with the drive and interest shown by my SACE connect class as we study the world’s biomes and ecosystems.  From the picture below, you can very clearly see the level of focus and passion for on the faces of the students and this speaks volumes of their commitment to learning.

Finally, student wellness is imperative.  Every school ensures that their students feel safe and secure and and they protect the rights of each student to a flexible and inclusive education.  At AIS our wellbeing programme is geared towards equipping our students with knowledge and practice to keep fit and well because we recognise that student wellness is key to them flourishing academically and to become the best people they can be.
