Welcome to Nourish News - May 2023

For the first time in years, Nourish staff and board members gathered in-person late in April to think, feel, and dream together. One activity had us suggest titles for a book about the first 10 years pursuing our vision – of a Nova Scotia where children and youth are well-nourished to live, learn and play. “It Started with Breakfast” was one suggestion; “Good Things Growing,” another.

Together we surfaced a number of themes. First, like all non-profits in the context of inflation and labour shortages, we must work to be a great workplace. Secondly, given the changes in our context – including the dissolution of school boards, the establishment of SchoolsPlus, and the need for healthy food in community settings as well as at school – Nourish must define our unique role and while growing our activities and impact. Third, to support the first and second, we must diversify and expand our funding base. Overarching this work, we want to engage and support youth as food leaders and centre justice and equity.

I’m lacing up my sneakers for the next 10 years!

Warmly,

Foraging in Nova Scotia: Fiddleheads!

It is fiddlehead season in Mi'kma'ki! These native plants, known as Ma’susi’l in the Mi'kmaw language, are the young shoots of the ostrich fern and can be foraged in shaded areas with wet soil (or at your local farmers' market).

To eat, first remove the brown, papery husk and then boil in salted water or steam until tender, about 10 minutes. (This is a necessary step as raw fiddleheads have been linked with food poisoning outbreaks.) Roast or sauté with a fat of your choice (we love butter), salt, and any other herbs or spices you'd like!
