DEC Officers bust deer poachers across NYS



A hunter in Orange County accused of taking deer illegally on two occasions in one week is facing several charges. On Nov. 17, Police Officers in the town of Deerpark requested assistance from ECOs after receiving reports an individual had shot a deer from the roadway. ECO Doroski responded to the location and spoke to the subject who claimed he shot the antlered deer from the roadway with his crossbow because it appeared to be injured.  Read more

Snowy Owl saved by sheriff deputies



The sharp eye someone in the public relaying information to officers saved an injured Snowy Owl on Tuesday.

Orleans County Sheriff Christopher Bourke reports that on Tuesday morning at 7:36am, Orleans County Sheriff’s Animal Control Officer Katlyn Moore responded to a report of an injured Snowy Owl on Swett Road in Lyndonville. Read more

Hochul signs two new laws to minimize cruelty to horses



Governor Kathy Hochul today signed legislation to prevent equine cruelty to recognize National Day of the Horse. Legislation S.2163B/A.5109A prohibits the slaughter of horses for human or animal consumption. Legislation S.1677A/A.3552A increases fines for selling disabled Equidae.

In the Outdoors: New York state’s firearm season for deer ends



New York State’s Southern Zone firearm deer season is in the rearview mirror, ending Sunday with a soggy whimper instead of a bang. Typical these days of changing climate.



Actually, many gunshots were heard across the state on the final Saturday, in deer country as many of the half million New York deer hunters, who had early hopes and dreams of putting venison in the freezer, gave it one last shot.  Read more

Column: Cuba Free Library holds robust public meeting over book “challenge”



The street and the parking lot at the Cuba Dollar Store were pack solid. The line into the Palmer Opera House stretched down 2 storefronts.



Some spectacular Holiday event? No- a meeting of the Cuba Circulating Library’s Board of Trustees, usually a ho hum event, I’m sure. This particular meeting invited the public to hear and to make comments on a recent book challenge involving a Statement of Concern about Library Resources. Village of Wellsville takes the next steps toward “parking lot” eminent domain, read the resolutions



The process of using the power of eminent domain by the village of Wellsville to force the sale of a centrally located parking lot has continued.

After last night’s village board meeting, the path is clear for the legal action to continue. A SEQR(State Environmental Quality Review Act) review was done to determine if the transfer of property created an environmental health issue as defined by SEQR law.  Read more

Hornell boys and girls basketball pick up wins on Tuesday night, both Red Raider squads undefeated

The Hornell Red Raiders improve to 4-0 on the season with their 65-38 win on the road against the Haverling Rams Tuesday night.

The Raiders grabbed the lead early and led 31-16 going into halftime. “I thought we shared the ball well,” said Hornell coach, Kirk Scholes. “We also rebounded the ball well. We were able to get in transition and play the game at our pace.”  Read more
