“It's not the load that breaks you down. It's the way you carry it.”

Harriet                                                                --Lena Horne

I hit my first 100 subscribers for this newsletter last week, one week after dropping it, and I can’t lie. That felt good! I love community, and I am thankful for this one. This newsletter is dedicated to the whole life I intend to live this year, and of course ALL things Blackity Black Black, so let me know if there is anything you’d love to see in forthcoming issues.

I do want to pause and recognize how life has been LIFING for a lot of us recently. Overwhelmed is the sentiment of a lot of folks I’ve spoken to lately, and I get it. Trying to keep up with all the things life is throwing at us in adulthood, post-COVID, is like…whew. I saw someone say on IG that if they had known that their parents were being constantly harassed and annoyed all day, they may have pulled the chicken out the freezer on time when asked, and I felt that. Like, I would have never touched my parents’ thermostat in my life if I had known how the bills were coming every month and how the bank account was looking afterwards. 😅 My God! My latest viral Twitter post also highlights that we are all kinda of just making it, and everyone needs a bit more love (more on that below).

At the same time, life is also exciting. Every transition is an opportunity, and everyday, it seems like another door that I didn’t even know existed is opening. If you are reading this, stop for a second to practice just a bit of gratitude, and also recognize that YOU ARE DOING YOUR BEST. Give yourself some grace.

Happy Women’s History Month!

    FEATURED BLACK PRODUCT

Blackleaf Vodka

So, I am not biased at all by the fact that I know the amazing Black men who own Blackleaf. Seriously. This vodka is GOODT. And they ride for our community. Blackleaf sponsored my very first event for The Nile List, back when I launched it. I spotted them recently at the best Black-owned art gallery in Atlanta, and was reminded of how smooth it is, for a vodka.

FUNNY SHIT FROM THE INTERNET

Someone said she hit the “get a load of this guy” at the end 😂

FEATURED BLACK LOCAL BUSINESS:
Zucot Art Gallery

Speaking of Zucot, this is the preeminent location in Atlanta for dope Black art. Located in the historic Castleberry neighborhood, it serves culture and connections all day every day. I’ve seen a friend there every time I go, and I’ve also seen some of the most dynamic art I’ve ever laid eyes on in here.

ONE THING I DID WELL! ONE THING I FUCKED UP!

I am practicing grace and respect for myself. This part of the newsletter is about a personal promise and also accountability. I hope it inspires you to show yourself some appreciation while consistently pushing to be better!

👍I auntied like a MF recently. Someone told me I’m an “old school” auntie. I recently flew out to hang with my amazing big sister and my dope neice as my sis transitions back to work after her maternity leave ended, and when I tell you her baby is my baby! Down to waking up at night with the baby, I have been doing auntie life amazingly lately. It helps that my sister made the most perfect baby ever, too.

👎I have not been controlling my anxiety and intrusive thoughts very well. I started my morning meditations again, because I manifest a lot of physical anxiety when I’m stressed out (literal chest pains), but I think I need to do more. I’ve been letting stress weigh me down more than I should in the last couple of weeks. If you have recommendations for dealing with anxiety, hook a sister up!

 MY BLOG!

This blog post started as a Twitter thread, and has sparked a CONVERSATION!

I went viral completely by accident this week. One morning, I woke up with it on my heart to share more about the most painful friendship breakup I experienced at an already painful time in my life. Honestly, I don’t know why it came up. It has been 6 years since this happened, and so much more life has happened since then. But it stays with you - I think mostly because there are still so many times where something happens that my nervous system tells me I should share a thing with my best friend, until I realize that I don’t have that best friend any longer. It’s a grieving process for a person who is still alive, but no longer there for you, and we are simply not equipped with the tools to handle it.

GOOD TROUBLE

Image description

So, last month, one of my neighbors posted in our Facebook group that she got an emergency foster care placement and needed baby items. Something put it on my heart to make something shake for this baby. I collected from my community, and even got a donation of a brand new stroller that he so desperately needed. Turns out, the baby (Karter), is from my hometown of Savannah, born in the hospital that I volunteered at in high school. He was placed with my neighbor after being born 2 months premature at just 2 lbs. After having heart surgery, he is thriving. I helped foster mom to create a page on the (Black-led) platform for moms, Villie, so that if anyone would like to donate or send items needed, they can. Help out Baby Karter as he navigates his new world, if you can.
