Topic 1 –

DRUG FREE AUTRALIA’S PARTICIPATION IN THE 2024 UN COMMISSION NARCOTIC DRUGS (CND)

As this bulletin goes ‘live’, DFA’s President-Elect, Gary Christian is currently participating in the annual United Nations’ INTERNATIONAL drug summit - the CND in Vienna.

Image description

In particular, Gary is arranging to link with the following:

  • Johan Maertens representing the global Rotary Action Group for Addiction Prevention
  • Amy Ronshausen - President of the World Federation Against Drugs
  • OVOM - (One Voice, One Message) to help promote primary prevention of drug use.
  • Jon Sigfussen from ‘Planet Youth’, a successful prevention consultancy based in Iceland.
  • Other members of the International Federation of Non-Government Organizations

Gary’s message clearly states that ‘prevention is better than cure’, particularly preventing the initial uptake of drugs. He is compassionate about helping those who are suffering from drug addiction. Thus he supports early intervention and recovery-based treatment.

Drug Free Australia is bringing current research on prevention to the table, often dispelling many of the ‘myths’ and misinformation that is being promoted within a ‘harm reduction only’ approach. If you are at the CND, make sure to catch up with Gary Christian.

PILL TESTING AT MUSIC FESTIVALS - DOES IT SAVE LIVES?

Image description

There is nothing more devastating for parents and families than the sudden loss of a child. And if drugs are involved this becomes even sadder - as it could well have been prevented. It is no wonder that parents seek some sought of solution to try to understand why this happened to their family. The claim that pill testing would prevent this unspeakable tradgedy is therefore appealing and may even sound compassionate. However, research now shows that rather than save lives, many more could be lost.

Here is the reason:

Topic 5 -

PLANET YOUTH - AN EFFECTIVE DRUG PREVENTION MODEL FOR COMMUNITIES

Image description

Planet Youth was developed from the Icelandic Prevention Model – a theory-based approach with demonstrated effectiveness in reducing substance use in Iceland for over 20 years. The Planet Youth Guidance Program is designed to strengthen protective factors, mitigate risk factors, and build healthy community environments for positive youth development by focusing on key domains in the local school-community: Family, peer group, leisure (out-of-school) time, and school.

The Planet Youth Guidance Program is a population-wide primary prevention process designed to have a long-term impact in communities on reducing youth substance use through creating a healthy built environment. Planet Youth treats society as “the patient“ and believes that building a community environment that delays the onset of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs for as long as possible is an effective approach to reducing the long-term health problems related to youth substance use.
