Community Prevention Works - Rotary Action Group for Addiction Prevention

Image description

With the International Convention for Rotary scheduled for Singapore from 25-31 May, the Rotary Action Group for Addiction Prevention is set to make a significant contribution in the ‘House of Friendship’. Strong links are being made with the Mental Health Action Group as well as several prevention groups from the United States.

Last year in Melbourne, we were able to meet with the International President of Rotary and discuss with him the links between Drug Abuse and Mental Health issues.

Pictured below L-R are Rotarian Kris Lenoir, Rotary International President, Gordon McInally, Rotarians Johan Maertens and Josephine Baxter.

At the same time, we were also able to launch an influential book - ‘Street Drugs, The New Addiction Industry’ by renowned author, Elaine Walters OAM. This year will see the International Launch of her publication, as families and communities increasingly seek help to prevent youth drug use across the globe.

Topic 2 -

INJECTING ROOMS AND PILL TESTING? NOT A GOOD COMBINATION!

Why not? - Take a look at the current evidence. - Studies in Australia show the following:

  1. The Injecting Room is supported by a strong bias that omits prevention of (or stopping drug use)as being the best option. The reality is that it is clearly MDMA (Ecstasy) that causes these deaths and yet the injecting room, like every other pill testing outfit in the world, will green-light MDMA-only pills, pretending they are not the cause.

  2. 14% of deaths were from idiosyncratic individual reactions to the MDMA in Ecstasy. Pill testing has no blood test that can identify who will have such a reaction and wouldn’t even know what to be looking for.

  3. 48% of Australian deaths were from poly-drug use, where Ecstasy pills were co-used with alcohol, amphetamines or cocaine which create a deadly synergy. Pill testing doesn’t do blood tests of users to see what they have already consumed.

  4. 29% of deaths were from accidents, mostly car accidents. Pill testing has no equipment that can identify the accident-prone.

  5. There have only been 3 deaths since the year 2000 - in Melbourne in 2017 - from a 'bad batch' of pills, where three died from pills containing three illicit drugs. Toxicologist Andrew Leibie has written to Drug Free Australia, saying that portable pill testing was then incapable of detecting three drugs mixed together (private correspondence on request).

  6. Testing the purity of a pill is irrelevant to deaths within Australia. Even the George Soros-funded harm reduction flagshipDrug Policy Alliance tells the truth that Ecstasy overdoses are rare. If they can tell the truth, why can’t Australian pill testing advocates do the same? In fact a South Australian study demonstrated that MDMA levels in the blood bear no relationship to MDMA dose in the pill. Pill content, dose and resulting plasma concentrations of 3,4-methylendioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) in recreational 'ecstasy' users - PubMed (nih.gov)See the graph in this study which shows that two people who ingested around the same 115 grams of MDMA had blood levels where one was ten times higher than the other. So purity is a ruse.

  7. The ANUevaluation of the 2019 Canberra pill testing trial found that "those who received a test result confirming the substance to be what they thought it was were likely to take as much or more than originally intended" (our emphasis) and "concordance between expectation and identification is associated with stable or increased intention to take a substance." The logic is irrefutable - pill testing will cause more use and thus more deaths. Is this what Parliamentarians want? Or the public?

Drug Free Australia firmly believes that politicians and communities should not be 'played', and asks all like-minded citizens to call them to account.

WHAT IS DRUG FREE AUSTRALIA DOING TO PROMOTE PREVENTION OF USE OF DRUGS! HERE ARE JUST 5 EXAMPLES

      1.  Presence in the International Arena

        Image description

Gary Christian, President Elect of Drug Free Australia, attended the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs in March. He made some great contacts and worked closely with others who are concerned about the need for Primary Prevention - i.e helping people to stop using drugs early or even contemplating starting. Gary reports that he is very impressed with the efforts of:

        • OVOM - One Voice, One Message - a new community group with personal experience as to the harms of drug use - even just one time users. OVOM wants families and young people to understand that it is their right to grow up in communities that reject drug use.
        • RAG AP is the Rotary group who want to develop a culure of Youth Influencers who will help their peers to know that it’s okay to SAY NO when being pressured to try out drugs. It’s their right to SAY NO. That their ‘friends’ who pressure them into taking drugs are not really their true friends. They lack respect for people’s choices. YOUTH INFLIENCERS are young people who can do some training about Addiction and then come up with solutions for their peers, to keep them safe from drug use.

        2.  Presenting at Upcoming Conferences

          Image description

DRUG FREE AUSTRALIA will be presenting at the AddictionZ Conference on the Gold Coast at the end of April. Our poster session will showcase just how important the YOUTH influence can be and how to get involved.

Facts about the Michigan School Shooting and Cannabis links…

AALM - Americans Against Legalizing Marijuana offers some hard facts on a recent school shooting in the United Sates that has been in Australian Press recently.

The Oxford High School shooter, Ethan Crumbley, believed killing students would teach a lesson and benefit society, according to a recording he made the night before the crime.

"What I’m doing is an act to show that people are taking it away, and I’m trying to preserve it," he says. "To show that no one is safe no matter how hard they work."

The parents of the accused Oxford High School shooter had an unsecured "marijuana grow operation" in their basement, Oakland County prosecutors said.

Jennifer and James Crumbley, parents of Michigan school shooter, sentenced to 10 to 15 years for manslaughter

AALM demands the release of toxicology reports for all mass murderers because...

                • Massive Danish study finds strong link between marijuana addiction and mental illness
