Even though music is sometimes referred to as the international language, learning to "read" music may feel more like encountering a foreign language. Music reading is not inherently difficult, but students are often attempting to translate those "dots on the staff" into musical communication while simultaneously learning to play an instrument or sing.
Recently, after years of working with beginning pianists and handbell ringers, I devised a precursor to music reading to help one of Elizabeth's private voice students. Being able to visualize crucial elements of the score. such as the text, pitch movement, and timing, without the additional challenge of the musical staff freed the student to focus more on the process of singing.
