Conserving our Heritage

Protecting our Future

Dear Nick,

Welcome to the July 2024 Newsletter. This is a bumper month with our Exhibition, 2 special walks and a talk.  May the sun shine throughout!

RDS Exhibition

July and August

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Society, an exhibition will be on display upstairs in the museum at King John’s House during June, July and August. This provides information about the Society and what has been achieved over the decades. The museum is open Monday to Saturday between 10.00am and 4.00pm.

Open Day - Saturday 7th September

The Society will be hosting an open day in the Court Room of the Town Hall between 10.00am and 1.00pm on Saturday 7th September, both for members and for the public in general. This will be a free exhibition showing how Romsey has developed and changed over the past 50 years and outlining some of the ways the Society has influenced this. There will also be an opportunity for people to tell us how they would like to see the town change in the future and what they might like the society to be doing over the next 50 years. Tea, coffee and cake will be available and we hope members will join us and invite their neighbours, friends and family to join us too.

Moths – the Weird and the
Wonderful

Saturday 3rd August

This is a magical chance to see a wide range of moths close up in a location near the Abbey. They will have been trapped overnight and we will be able to view them under the guidance of Tim Norriss, who was Moth Recorder for Hampshire. As they begin to warm up in the morning, before taking flight, he will identify the moths and tell us about them.

Children over the age of 8 are welcome to attend under close supervision of a parent/ grandparent/guardian.

Places are limited to 20.

50th Anniversary Summer Party

A massive thank you to everyone who helped make our 50th Anniversary Summer Party a success. Around 70 members enjoyed the evening sunshine including several who were present at the very first meeting in June 1974.

Have you seen this bird recently?

A big thank you to everyone who recorded their sightings of swifts last month.  It is not too late to contribute to the survey of the swift population in Hampshire.
If you have spotted swifts flying low over rooftops and/or seen them accessing their nest site, it would be really helpful to report this. You can do this at https://www.hampshireswifts.co.uk/survey
We are hoping to get a list of known swift nesting sites in Romsey that we can check on a regular basis.
If you would like to help with this - and it will only be for the next couple of months as the swifts will be on their way back south in July - please get in touch with Kate Allen ([email protected]) for more details.
Any help with monitoring will be much appreciated.
