🌿 Thank You for Renewing with Demeter for 2026! 🌿

2026  renewal documents were due on April 15th, and we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of our licensees who renewed with Demeter for the upcoming year. Your continued partnership means the world to us and helps us to continue our certification work and spread awareness of Biodynamic Certification!

It’s been a busy but rewarding season, with renewal forms steadily flowing in. I’ve truly enjoyed the chance to connect with so many of you—whether through emails, calls, or quick questions. These moments of communication not only help ensure everything is in order but also give me the opportunity to engage with you directly, which I genuinely value.

Doudlah Farms Organics is a woman- and farmer-owned enterprise dedicated to advancing organic and regenerative agriculture in the Midwest. Our mission is to produce nutrient-dense, safe, and transparent food while building a resilient food system that supports farmers, consumers, and the environment. We are proudly Quad Certified—USDA Organic, Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC), Demeter Biodynamic, and Tested Clean—demonstrating our commitment to the highest standards of soil health, product integrity, and environmental stewardship.

What sets us apart is our FARMWISE project—Farmers Accessing Resilient Market through Wisconsin Infrastructure for Sustainable Enterprises. This innovative initiative addresses a critical gap in the organic supply chain by creating a state-of-the-art facility to clean, process, package, and distribute organic-regenerative crops. By shortening the supply chain and keeping infrastructure local, FARMWISE empowers farmers with better market access, reduces costs, and returns more value back to the farm.

Martin

Goter

Farm

Martin Goter is a fourth-generation farmer stewarding a 550-acre family-owned dry-land farm in central North Dakota where diverse grains and pulse crops are grown with the intention of restoring soil vitality and producing nutrient-dense food. After beginning Biodynamic practices in 2014 and achieving certification in 2019, the farm evolved into a system built on diverse rotations, minimal soil disturbance, and an ongoing commitment to strengthening the biological life of the soil. These practices are supported by biologically driven, on-farm fertility methods that reduce reliance on external inputs and strengthen long-term soil resilience. Flowering and diverse crops are intentionally incorporated to provide habitat and forage for pollinators. Volunteer regrowth after harvest is encouraged, and legumes such as hairy vetch are established in seasonally wet areas to keep living roots in the soil for as much of the year as possible.

Today the operation is certified Biodynamic, Regenerative Organic, Real Organic, and participates in the Soil and Climate Initiative — actively embracing a long-term commitment to environmental integrity and traceable production. Looking ahead, the farm is transitioning toward a fully gluten-free crop portfolio and planning livestock integration to further enhance nutrient cycling and ecological resilience. The vision is to leave the land healthier for future generations while supplying high-quality crops to partners and communities who value both human health and the well-being of the environment.

Stephens

Land &

Cattle

Stephens Land and Cattle sells bulk certified organic and Biodynamic Turkey Red hard red winter wheat. Turkey wheat has a rich cultural history and distinct bread baking qualities that advanced milling technology and helped farmers create the American breadbasket since the 1800s. The wheat grows tall because it has height traits left intact, as compared to the semi-dwarf wheat that you will find in most varieties on the market.

Stephens families of Kansas have been farmers for five generations, raising wheat and cattle. Demetria’s father Bryce started growing Turkey wheat exclusively in 1994. That's the same year the farm gained organic certification from the Organic Crop Improvement Association. Bryce achieved Biodynamic certification in 2012.

Demetria carries on that legacy as the Stephens Land and Cattle farm manager near Jennings, Kansas. As markets demand, Demetria would like to diversify Biodynamic products for sale like Snow White hard white winter wheat, an open pollinated white milo, as well as bison meat. Her ultimate goal as a grain farmer is to sell the best quality food with a Biodynamic system that sustains itself and only exports the extras.

Biodynamic in the News

🌱 A recent article in Oregon Wine Press discusses Biodynamic and other regenerative growing practices and certifications at length, and features Demeter Board member Craig Camp, manager at Troon Vineyard.    Read the full piece here:  Rooted in Responsibility

🌱 Wine Spectator's Dr. Vinny delved into Biodynamic vineyard management in a special Earth Day-adjacent piece, published here.

🌱 Several publications, including YubaNet.com, covered the release of a new collaborative private label wine line from Demeter-certified Frey Vineyards called "Rally."   Made in collaboration with two local food cooperatives, "The Rally label was born from a shared vision among the three companies: to create a wine that celebrates community, collaboration and a resilient future."

Research into Biodynamic Methods is Catching up to Steiner's Lectures

One of the most frequent ways that people dismiss Biodynamic farming is that it originates from pseudoscience or mysticism. This is understandable if a reader of the Agriculture Course given by Rudolf Steiner does not have a contextual foundation like the attendees of the 1924 lecture series. Steiner at the time admitted that some of the things he said may sound fantastic, and these things should not be accepted because he said it. Rather the practices should be implemented, tested, and proven.

Steiner lectured about making our livestock manure, compost, and soil more intelligent with the use of Biodynamic preparations.  To me, this at first sounded like a strange way to talk about soil. But with time and emerging research in the last decades, I recognized that the understanding and language we now have about microbes did not exist in 1924.  We now know that microbes and plants can have symbiotic relationships in microbially rich soils. The plants communicate a need to the microbes for a soil mineral, and the microbes respond with the mineral in exchange for photosynthesized sugar. Is not communication a sign of intelligence? The aim of Biodynamic preparation use is to stimulate the soil life or, dare I say, raise the intelligence of the soil.

Scientific research has occurred since the original lectures were given, and a body of research is emerging that demonstrates what biodynamic practices can do, what they cannot do, and what needs more examination.

Dr. Jürgen Fritz is one such researcher who has 17 published and peer reviewed studies on the impacts of biodynamic practices. Dr. Fritz presented a workshop in Dornach, Switzerland last February about his recent collaborative research on “Enrichment of putative plant growth promoting microorganisms in biodynamic compared with organic agriculture soils.” The research occurred on three farms in Germany and 21 farms in France covering different crops and soil types. The research team found that “biodynamic preparations can act as biofertilizers that promote soil health by increasing the abundance of plant growth promoting microorganisms.” The study can be found among many others at Dr. Fitz’s University Kassel staff page.

Another research project run by FiBL in Switzerland has compared different farming systems and the impacts on soil fertility, yield, and soil quality since 1978 (48 years), found here at the DOK Trial.  The farming systems are biodynamic (D), organic (O), and conventional (K). The study shows that biodynamic management resulted in the highest soil humus content, highest quantity of soil microorganisms, and highest nutrient mobilization. Biodynamic practices also resulted in a lower need for plant protection products, a lower energy/fuel input, and the lowest greenhouse gas emissions. Yields were shown to be 85% of the conventional comparisons across all crops (non-legume crops were lowest but legumes were similar), but the yields required 50% of the nutrient and energy inputs and needed 92% fewer pesticides. Overall, the organic and biodynamic yields were more stable over the long term.

As time moves on, it seems that the research is catching up to what Steiner shared over 100 years ago and what many practicing Biodynamic farmers observe as effective. Modern day scientists are translating what once seemed fantastic or anecdotal stories into controlled, materialistic research that demonstrates impacts of Biodynamic practices on environmental, soil, and food quality.
