Autumn bulb planting around Kentish Town

Save the date! Saturday 2nd November, 11am – 1pm for Autumn bulb planting around Kentish Town’s ‘Web of Well-being’ Community Gardens and high street planters.

Yes, it's that time of year again for refreshing the community gardens and high street planters with fresh flowering bulbs - little buried parcels of hope to raise our weary spirits as Winter finally turns into Spring next year. And – even more vitally – to provide vital early season nectar for foraging bumble bees as they emerge from hibernation. Their numbers are plummeting with climate change, garden and agricultural pesticides and habitat loss all taking their toll, and they need all the help we can give them.

All welcome: It's sociable, fun and very worthwhile – and the more of us the merrier, the quicker the job is done, and the sooner a warm up coffee and snack in a local café can be enjoyed together.

What to bring: If you have them, bring a trowel or bulb planting tool and gardening gloves (but if not we’ll have some spares). We have some lovely bags of bulbs but extra donations are always welcome if you have some going spare. We’re hoping for sunshine, but it will be November, so wrap up warm for an enjoyable morning.

Joining and Itinerary: Gather for an 11am start at the 'Greening Your Footprint Garden' outside Kentish Town Fire Station in Highgate Road NW5. From here we head to Platform 1 Thames Link Cottage Garden, followed by Kentish Town Neighbourhood Forum’s Big Blue High Street Planters between the Leighton Road and Gaisford Street junctions, ending at Raglan Street Estate Gardens around 1pm.

Saving Energy: Keeping Warm

A drop-in programme of early evening workshops will be offered on Wednesdays by Retrofit Kentish Town from November 6th, 5.15-6.45pm at the Kentish Town Library. We will be looking to cut our energy bills whilst keeping warm and comfortable. Check for programme updates on www.retrofitkentishtown.org.

Looking Ahead: Nature Connections Autumn Ramble

Embrace the season on this late Autumn Nature Connections ramble around Parliament Hill Fields on Sunday 17th November, 11.30am - 1pm.

Image description

Join us for our TKT Nature Connections Autumn Hedgerow and Leaf Fall walk, to explore some of Parliament Hill Fields magnificent hedgerows and hear from Hampstead Heath ecologists about their importance in providing shelter and sustenance for local wildlife through the cold dark months of winter.

The walk starts and ends just inside the entrance to the Heath by the Highgate Road/Swains Lane junction, N6 6JS. Buses 88, 214 and C11 all stop close by.

We’ll also be sharing ways we can support local wildlife, as climate breakdown disrupts the complex patterns of seasonal change and puts survival for many of our local neighbourhood species at risk. And embracing the leaf fall season as we create this year’s fallen leaves and Autumn debris land art in homage to the trees, who share so much with us here, through all weathers and all seasons. Plus seasonal Nature poetry and writing from the TKT Nature Connections team. Do wrap up warm and join us. Its FREE and it would be wonderful to see you there.

Sturdy footwear and comfortable all weather clothing advised. If you need more information, contact Pomme Edwards at [email protected].
