Troon Vineyard & Farm is the world’s only Demeter Biodynamic® and Regenerative Organic Gold Certified® farm and winery. Our farm is located in Oregon's pristine Applegate Valley, surrounded by the beauty of the Siskiyou Mountains. In our gardens and vineyard, we nurture our crops according to the demanding standards required to achieve our elite certifications. We craft our selections of herbs and teas, grown with intention, utilizing Biodynamic and regenerative practices that express our farm’s unique individuality.

Each season, we harvest flowers and herbs at their peak of fragrance and vitality. Our Chamomile Tea is hand-harvested to protect the delicate flowers.  We then slowly dry the flowers in small batches to preserve their essential oils and distinctive personalities, expressing the character of our farm through their unique aromas and flavors.  Our herbs and teas are packaged in biodegradable pouches that offer an earth-friendly option.  This seasonal product is available on our website while in stock.  Each harvest, we continue to expand our selection of teas as our garden grows.

The Healing

Plant

The Healing Plant Garden and its herbal studio, located at Camphill Village in Copake, NY, bring person and plant closer together, growing high-quality herbal products that are provided to residents and visitors of Camphill Village, as well as local customers in the Berkshire Taconic region. The garden hosts more than 300 plant species, some of which are medicinal, and some that are culinary herbs. Some are grown for their beauty, their form, the color of their blossoms, or because they express something strange, unique, or archetypal.

The garden is situated on two acres of south-facing sloped land with good sun exposure in Camphill Village, Copake. The inspirations found within Rudolf Steiner’s biodynamic growing text — “Agriculture Course” — guide us in creating the most favorable conditions for an optimal manifestation of each species of plant.

Our teas are blended for health and enjoyment from a variety of homegrown Biodynamic herbs and can be purchased through the Camphill Village online store.

Demeter at the EcoFarm Conference

By Evrett Lunquist, Director of Certification

EcoFarm filled the beautiful Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, CA from January 21 – 24,  and Demeter USA was there with a booth. The Acacia trees coated everything with golden pollen and the ocean waves provided the background audio to the many conversations and workshops. Jim Fullmer, representing the Biodynamic Economic Working Group, joined the exhibit booth to help promote Biodynamic certification and raise awareness about Biodynamic farming and certified Biodynamic products.

The booth attracted a diverse audience – organic and Biodynamic farmers, wholesale distributors, students, some new interest in Demeter certification, a Demeter inspector and an organic inspector exploring adding Biodynamic to their qualifications, university researchers, a SARE representative, a journalist, an open-source software developer, and an input manufacturer wanting to get Demeter approval.

A special shout out to Katrina Frey with Frey Vineyards for being a presence at EcoFarm and the first Demeter certified vineyard and winery in the USA. Frey Vineyards sponsored a wine tasting evening with 18 area vineyards (including 2 Biodynamic) and provided wine for the last dinner of the conference.

Many attendees were familiar with Biodynamic farming, and some had no awareness. I heard stories of internships on Biodynamic farms and some that worked on Biodynamic farms since gone. Before this year's conference had concluded, conversations were already underway about coming back to EcoFarm next year and working with others to organize Biodynamic workshops – something absent in recent years. I left the conference knowing there is much support out there for Biodynamic alongside new offers to help spread the word.

Attending the Fellowship of the Preparation Makers Gathering

I was deeply blessed and grateful to attend my third annual Fellowship of the Preparation Makers gathering this past week at Camphill Village Kimberton Hills in Phoenixville, PA. The richness and depth of these gatherings leave one with a profound sense of how interconnected and intertwined we all are—from the spirit world to the plant world, the animal world, and the human world.

What was especially eye-opening at this gathering was learning how the birth of one very special child ultimately led to the introduction of Biodynamics to the United States by Ehrenfried Pfeiffer, and eventually to the coining of the word “organic” as an offshoot of Biodynamic agriculture.  Let us stop here and re-look at what I just wrote!!

In Pfeiffer's teaching and writing about Biodynamics, he often used the words ‘organic whole’ and only after this, others picked up this term, citing Pfeiffer. ‘Organic’ Agriculture as we know it today started with the teaching of Biodynamics.

Now on with our story…

We dove deeply into the history of Pfeiffer’s life and the path he walked alongside Rudolf Steiner. I sat in a room full of people with personal connections and stories of Pfeiffer—from simple memories of sitting at his dining table to learning about his struggles to keep the spirit of Biodynamics alive in the United States. We have so much to thank this man for.  Many of us are on this Biodynamic journey because of him.

I was saddened to learn that near the end of his life, Pfeiffer felt the one thing he had failed at was community building. I couldn’t help but feel that nothing could be further from the truth. The circle of humans I sat within is the very community I have found through Biodynamics. Though he believed he failed in that lifetime, he succeeded in the most profound way possible. We are connected as a living community because of him, and for that I offer my deepest gratitude and thanks to Ehrenfried Erwin Pfeiffer.

After this deeply moving learning experience, our group—together with the villagers of the Camphill Community—gathered around a tree on the farm planted by Pfeiffer himself to celebrate the tradition of Wassailing. Wassailing is a beautiful ritual of sending the winter spirits on their way and welcoming the spirits of spring. Toast was hung in the branches as an offering, cider was poured onto the roots, and we walked the orchard together singing Wassailing songs, making joyful hoots, howls, and rhythmic sounds with our voices and wood. Simply precious.

The Fellowship gathering lasted over four days, but due to an impending snowstorm, I departed after lunch on Saturday. I left with a full heart and a bag filled with wheat, coffee, herbs, teas, and bread. If you ever have the opportunity to attend the annual Fellowship of the Preparation Makers gathering, do it. You will find yourself surrounded by the elders of this movement, immersed in the deep wisdom of Biodynamics—and your soul will be ignited.

LOVE: Biodynamics is Love.
Biodynamics is Community.
Biodynamics will heal the world and the spirit through agriculture.

Gratitude for you my reader.
Gratitude for Pfeiffer.
Gratitude for Steiner.

Biodynamics In the News

Demeter in the Champagne region

An article published in December in Food & Wine includes interviews with Biodynamic vineyard owners in the Champagne region of France.   The farmers interviewed note the changes they have observed in their vines and soils as they switched to Biodynamic methods.

Jean-Sébastien Fleury, a fourth-generation grower, states that, “We can see, especially in hot years such as 2025, we have a better balance of sugar and acidity….. we have 1.5% more acidity, so better structure in the wines, which are technically better.”

Franck Pascal, another Biodynamic grower, compared his Biodynamic grapes with conventional.  ““When I started tasting the biodynamic part, I was surprised because there was a lot of flesh,” he says. “The other thing that was surprising was the length. It was really long. The taste was elegant, really pure. There was kind of an energy, something salty, almost an electrical sensation.”
