Impact Assessment Agency and Nuclear Regulator in Ignace, Sioux Lookout and Dryden January 19-22nd Holding Public Info Sessions About Review Process |
| |
| The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC or "the Agency") and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC or "the regulator) are holding information sessions about the federal integrated impact assessment process, how it applies to the project, and how to submit comments on the summary of the Initial Project. The details are on the IAAC web site under "Information Sessions". The sessions in Ignace kicked off with a free meal on the 19th, followed by sessions at the recreation centre at 1 and 6 pm on the 20th. |
Sessions in Sioux Lookout on January 21 start with a drop-in at the Library from 10:30 to 2:30 and a pop-up booth at the same time at the Fresh Market Foods on Queen Street, followed by an open house from 6-8 pm in the Rainforest Room at the Forest Inn and Conference Centre. There are two sessions in Dryden on Thursday, January 22nd. The first is a drop-in session piggy-backing on the community lunch at the Dryden Native Friendship Centre from 11 to 1, followed by a session from 3 to 5 at the Dryden Go Getters Activity Centre at 84 St Charles Street. |

| NWMO Establishing New Committees for Review Process |
| |
| The NWMO is establishing two Working Groups to provide input as they prepare their impact statement and supporting documents, with the expectation that the members will provide input on NWMO studies and reports. While the NWMO describes the working groups as being composed of “local and regional members”, invitees must live “in proximity to the Project” and volunteers must reside in Dryden, Ignace or one of “the unincorporated municipalities in close proximity to the site”. |
These groups are the “Human Environment (People) Working Group” which will focus on “topics related to various community well-being and safety aspects” and the “Environment Working Group”, which will focus on topics related to” various environmental aspects, including land, water, and air”. We the Nuclear Free North has not received information about these working groups from the NWMO. If interested in participating, please contact the NWMO via [email protected]. |

| Clock is Running on Nuclear Waste Project Comment Period |
| |
| Today we hit the mid-point in the 30 day comment period on the Nuclear Waste Management Organization's radioactive waste transportation and burial scheme. The federal review commenced on January 5th, and the public has until February 4th to comment on the NWMO's "Initial Project Description.
The 1,233-page document and a 92-page summary are available on the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada’s website. We the Nuclear Free North (WTNFN) has noted fundamental flaws in the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s (NWMO’s) Initial Project Description for its planned deep geological repository for all of Canada’s nuclear fuel waste.

The Impact Assessment Agency web page about the NWMO DGR project review includes key documents and notices related to the review, as well as posting of public comments. The current comment period is on the Initial project description, and there are two versions: the summary document is 92 pages long, and the full document including the Initial Project Description is 1,322 pages BUT only the first 262 pages of that document is the detailed (well, more detailed than the summary) version of the Initial Project Description. There is also a 10 page summary at the beginning of the full IPD. |

| In July We the Nuclear Free North produced 3 short "explainer" videos to provide background, context and analysis for the NWMO's false start to the federal review. |

| So what did NWMO have to say for itself in their "engagement" sessions last summer? |

| We the Nuclear Free North is an alliance of people and groups opposing a Deep Geological Repository for nuclear waste in Northern Ontario. We oppose the transport, burial and abandonment of this radioactive waste in our northern watersheds. Our alliance is honoured to have received the name Tataganobin: looking far ahead into the future. Learn more about who we are, and the origin and meaning of this name.
