| There is much happening in Edinburgh in the coming months, with something to interest just about everyone...with a hint of faith or Christianity touching many of the offerings. Here are some highlights, with links to more detailed information, or check out a curated list on our Diocesan Events Calendar. |

Edinburgh 900 is a year-long celebration of the city of Edinburgh. From the summer of 2024 until the summer of 2025, hundreds of events will mark the creation of this royal burgh by King David I in 1124. Events and exhibitions are categorised into one or more of 10 Themes, one of which is 'City of Faith'. Click on the links to see what might interest you, or even register to include an event of your own. |

The Scottish International Storytelling Festival runs from 18th until 31st October, with events taking place predominately in Edinburgh but also in other parts of Scotland. There are opportunities to here powerful stories from across divides, as well as learn more about Scotland's slave-trading past. |

| There is a feast of online lectures from Scotland's theologians this autumn. |
The Scottish Episcopal Institute is holding its ninth annual lecture on Thursday 24th October from 5pm on Zoom. The Revd Prof Annalu Waller will address Wholeness and Holiness, discussing the nature of disability and faith and what this means to her. She will talk about her life and why she believes we should view disability and difference as integral to being human. Her presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session. More information, joining details, and past lectures are on the SEI website. |
The Chalmers Lectures this year are shared by Dr Katie Cross and the Rev Prof John Swinton, both of Aberdeen University. The overarching theme is Hope in Today's World. Katie will present hope not as a passive set of emotions but as an active and collaborative practice, one which draws on community, protest, and politics, whilst John seeks to encourage a fresh sense of direction, closer bonds with others, and a more realistic, upbeat view of faith in the face of adversity. The final session will be a Q&A with Katie and John, chaired by the Rev Prof Alison Jack of Edinburgh. |

| There are a number of retreat centres across Scotland, some of which offer programmed retreats. Here is a flavour of what is coming up in three of them to whet your appetite. |
| |
| Whitchester Christian Centre is just south west of Hawick in the Scottish Borders. They are hosting a weekend retreat, exploring the Gospel of Luke, led by Drs Ros and Chris Brett, 15-17th November. There is also an opportunity to get Christmas cards written in relaxed comfort 22nd-24th November. Or you can just head there for Christmas itself and join their House Party 23rd-27th December. |

| The Bield at Blackruthven is situated a few miles west of Perth in Central Scotland. There are 2 programmed retreats left for the rest of 2024... Let's Sing! is a Day Retreat for anyone who enjoys singing (at any skill level) and is taking place on Friday 1st November. Her Beauty is a weekend retreat for women to explore, celebrate, and relax into their God-belovedness, which takes place 15-17th November. |

| Abernethy Kilmalieu is a relatively new retreat space on the west of Scotland, near Fort William (by 'near' we mean about an hour's drive away!) The 2024 retreats are now full, but 2025 retreats are in the pipeline and touch on everything from crafting to hillwalking to birdwatching. |

| Intentionally Intergenerational |
Churches (and other faith communities) are one of the few places in our society where different generations can come together in one place to do the same thing: worship God and grow as disciples. Because this is so counter-cultural, we sometimes need help to understand and practice how to be fully intergenerational. |
| |
| Faith in Older People are joining forces with Generations Working Together to host a free, online conference entitled Bringing the Generations Together. Register to join them on Wednesday 13th November from 2-4pm. |
| |
| Engage Worship are running a short, online course on Whole Church Worship exploring intergenerational services to draw together people of different ages and backgrounds. This will run across three Monday evenings in November (4th, 11th, 18th) from 7:30-9pm and costs £15 for all 3 sessions. |
| |
| Messy Church offers various online 'Masterclasses', which look at various aspects of encouraging worship, discipleship, and community in different ways. These Masterclasses come round relatively regularly, are either free or £10, and are available to book online.

| In this section of each newsletter, we will share a resource that might help you explore, learn, or grow in your faith: it could be a book, a podcast, an email subscription, or something else!
Receiving daily or weekly emails that encourage you in faith and life can be a helpful way to build a sustainable rhythm of reflection and prayer into our lives. There are a bewildering array of offerings available, and signing up for too many can have a negative effect! With the Center for Action and Contemplation, you can sign up for daily reflections or for a weekly summary, depending on what works best for you. Click on the image above to read a sample and, if you want to sign up, click here or use the green 'sign up' button on the CAC website.
