Searching for
Joan Bird

Written by Mariame Kaba,

designed by Neta Bomani

Joan Bird was a revolutionary member of the New York Black Panther Party, known for her work in Harlem community healthcare and her role in the Panther 21 trial alongside Afeni Shakur. After her 1970 acquittal, she stepped back from public activism. Mariame Kaba investigates her disappearance in this zine.

Red Channels

Written by Mariame Kaba,

designed by Neta Bomani

During the Red Scare, Black women performers like Hazel Scott, Fredi Washington, Lena Horne, and Shirley Graham were especially vulnerable to the Hollywood blacklist, which targeted artists on the left and deepened existing racial exclusions in the industry. Mariame Kaba traces the effects of the blacklist in this zine.
