Hulabhaig News #4

Image description

To mark the 40 ÷ 40 exhibition, visual artists Dalziel + Scullion hosted a studio visit.

Tea and Scones with Dalziel + Scullion.

As part of the 40 ÷ 40, 40th anniversary exhibition at An Lanntair, RSA academicians Louise Scullion and Matthew Dalziel hosted a talk about their island practice, with a focus on their ‘ambient films’, Stone Diary and Moor and their latest work in progress ‘Coast’ (working title) which looks at the contrasting phenomena of the inter-tidal zones and the dramatic energy of the sea along Uig coastline.

Louise also showed us around her studio and talked about her ‘Small Works of Great Scale’, a series of wearable artworks, made using found objects from Lewis, that serve as amulets to honour the biodiversity narratives they have encountered since moving here.

And the scones were lovely.

Other highlights this month include Meinish, an exhibition by Rhea Banker and 400 seconds of presentation stress in a PechaKucha event - see below...

Rhea Banker is a fine art photographer and award-winning book designer. After living and working in New York City for 30 years, she now makes her base in Northwestern Massachusetts. Much of her work is based on journeys to far rocky edges of the world, including Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, the Orkney Islands, Greenland, Svalbard, and Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego.

The Croftland series explores themes of crofting and visually offers commentary on post-clearance land use and the division of land in crofting townships on the west side of Lewis. This was born from a curiosity about practices in transhumance, the movement of animals to summer grazing by indigenous peoples and a curiosity as to why these stopped and the sheiling culture went out of use, possibly due to the advent of fencing.

It was great to be part of this event, even if it was a bit stressful.

Taking place simultaneously at An Lanntair, Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre, Shetland Arts and online, the evening featured eight short, visually striking talks by the following artists:

Laura Drever (Orkney)

Anna Gardiner and Frances Scott of Moti Collective (Orkney)

Andy Laffan of Hulabhaig (Lewis)

Zoe Paterson Macinnes (Lewis)

Joyce Davies (Shetland)

Shona Main (Shetland)

Meg Rodger (Uist)

Alex Brown and Rosie Blake (Uist)

It was great to see so much artist talent across the islands and a huge thank you to Andrew Eaton Lewis, for hosting the event and overcoming some huge last minute technical issues.

If you missed the event online, you can see a transcript of my talk on the Hulabhaig website or click the 'Read More...' link below.
