Certification Cycle Update

During the time of the winter solstice, many of us are charting our course for the new year and reflecting on the year that is coming to a close. Here in the Demeter office, things are no different. We are reflecting on the past year and setting our intentions for the year to come.

Preparations are already in place for some exciting new changes related to the current checklist our inspectors are using in ECERT, our certification database. We are connecting weekly via ZOOM with new clients interested in Demeter certification, to support their application process. We have already begun coordinating with organic certification bodies to offer dual inspections for any of their clients with Demeter certifications. Trainings for new inspectors for the coming year are currently in development. And as the year comes to a close, we are sending out offerings of gratitude to our current inspection team and giving thanks and wrapping up details for those Demeter Certified clients who will not be with us in the coming year.

As with farming, there is a yearly cycle to our work here in the Demeter office with each season bringing different tasks along the way. As the year ends, we look to the 2025 calendar and lay out our ‘map’ of intentions for a successful and healthy new year to come!

Peace, blessings and gratitude to all.

Biodynamic Pioneer:

Fred Kirschenmann

By Evrett Lunquist,

Director of Certification

Image description

I first met Fred Kirschenmann on his farm in Medina, North Dakota in 2001. With me was Jim Fullmer, who was doing Fred’s Biodynamic farm inspection for Demeter USA. I was an inspector in training. While familiar with Biodynamic farming for some time, this was my first Demeter farm inspection visit. The next year I went back as the trained inspector. It was then that Fred shared with a chuckle that he thought the role model for an inspector was Columbo (the LAPD detective played by Peter Falk on TV from 1968 - 2003) - unassuming demeanor, attentive to the often-overlooked details, a certain air of apparent ineptitude, good rapport, and effusive amount of gratitude. To this day, I try to mix in humor, maintain rapport if at all possible, pay attention, and be gracious.

Kirschenmann Family Farm was the first Demeter certified farm in the United States, pre-dating Demeter USA. Europeans from Demeter International (now Biodynamic Federation – Demeter International) came to certify the farm in 1981. Demeter USA was established in 1985 and took on that certification that continued until 2018.

Fred was teaching Theology in Ohio when he was introduced to organic farming by his student Dave Vetter (now at Grain Place Farm – Marquette, NE). When Fred’s father had a heart attack in the mid 1970’s, he decided to return to the farm on that condition that his father let him farm it organically. Soon after, a grain broker told Fred that he could get a higher premium if he converted to Demeter certified Biodynamic. In Fred’s words, “someone came and showed me how to do it, and it worked!” So, he continued for 37 years.

Fred served on the Demeter USA Board for many years until 2018. He was instrumental in the editing of the Biodynamic Farm Standard as it appears today as an expression of the Principles of Biodynamic Farming. He spoke at many Biodynamic conferences in the USA some of which I got to hear. He stood out to me as a pillar in the world, a jovial point of light amid the many challenges our world faces. His contributions are too many to count and summarize here. I understand that a Festshrift is in the works as an attempt to bring Fred’s enormous presence into perspective. Fred remarkably balanced farming, academia, theology, and business.

For those that know Fred, it is no surprise that he has an enormous library of books, including many books on Biodynamic and organic agriculture and Rudolf Steiner. His library includes many books with Fred’s contributions. A complete list would be extensive, but Fred does not keep a list of all his scholarly works. He recently donated 87 boxes of books from his library to The Land Institute in Salinas, KS.

I recently visited with Fred and his wife, Carolyn Raffensperger in Ames, IA. Carolyn shared that a colleague told her that “the contributions that Fred made to the world in a week are more than most people make in a lifetime.” Fred started contributing young when he rebuilt his family’s farm tractor in 1947 when he was 12. Although Fred said he does not recall all the details of his long past, we shared some laughs and reminisced about people we know in common.

Fred has a way of keeping things practical while balancing the 35,000-foot perspective – I could even say the cosmic or spiritual perspective. Demeter USA is a better organization today from Fred’s contributions. I am a better person because I know him. My profound gratitude goes out to him.

Fred’s journey with us on this Earth is coming to an end. He has lived with cancer for a few decades and the treatments are no longer effective. He and his family decided that he would move to hospice care. His family has created a page at Caring Bridge to share updates, memories and photos.   Caring Bridge - Fred Kirchenmann

What is Biodynamic

Agriculture?

We want to hear your one-liners!

We're asking because we'd like to add a page to our website where visitors can read a range of descriptions.  Reading what others say about the Biodynamic movement has the potential to speak to a wider audience, and may re-enliven our own way of speaking about it!

Biodynamic Marketing Opportunities

In the last issue, we featured an article on an initiative to build awareness of Biodynamic Agriculture in the marketplace here in the United States. In this issue, we will highlight two existing and developing resources that can be accessed by both Demeter Certified businesses and consumers.

The Demeter Directory

Demeter USA hosts a directory of certified Biodynamic operations on its website at biodynamicfood.org. This directory is kept up-to-date as new certified operations join us and leave certification. It has some searchability features that allow users to look for a certain category of product or market, or to find the listing of a specific operation.

The Demeter Directory also includes a map showing all certified farms and businesses in the United States, allowing individuals to investigate operations that sell Biodynamic products in a specific area.  The map also demonstrates the geographic distribution of our licensees across the globe.

Demeter businesses can add photos, logos, descriptions, and contact information to personalize their listings.

BFDI Product Database

The Biodynamic Federation Demeter International (BFDI) also hosts a database, listing currently certified businesses and the products they certify. The database can be accessed at BFDI product database.

Demeter USA’s licensees are listed there, along with certified operations from around the world. Users of the database have the option to search by the business name or by product. Searches by country, and by certifier are also possible.

In addition, certified businesses can make use of a Marketplace feature within the BFDI product database. The Marketplace allows operations to post certified items that they have available, or to request products that they are looking for. This marketplace will facilitate networking and communication among certified farms and processors, and open new markets for Biodynamic goods.

Demeter USA’s licensees will receive an email, coming soon, with information about accessing the BFDI database and the Marketplace and creating a personalized presence there. Stay tuned!

Demeter at the 2024 Acres USA

Eco-Ag Conference & Trade Show

By Evrett Lunquist, Director of Certification

Demeter shared a booth at the Acres Conference with the Viroqua Biodynamic Group December 2 – 5 with about 900 in attendance. We had a good balance of educating about Biodynamic practices and discussing certification with passersby. We heard from several folks that want to pursue Biodynamic certification. Jeff Poppen presented a well-attended workshop on his Tennessee farm and 50-year journey with Biodynamic farming. He just scratched the surface of his wealth of wisdom and personal experience. Jeff has a wonderful way of making lofty, far-out concepts understandable, practical, and common sense.

The Conference's first keynote was Allen Williams with Understanding Ag, a regenerative consulting partnership with Gabe Brown. Allen shared some soon to be released research that looked at the connection between biologically active soils, diverse plant species on farms, the health of animals on the farms, and the related phytonutrient density of the foods coming from these farms. Food quality being tied to farm biodiversity and soil vitality. Not only this but the research was showing that the food nutrition was not tied to fertility input additions, rather biologically active soils with nutrient cycling via livestock grazing. Sounds like a regenerative farm organism. This is a fundamental principle and connection that Demeter USA, the Biodynamic Association , Biodynamic farmers and food processors have understood for decades. How refreshing to hear this coming from outside of Biodynamic circles.

Nell Hanssen

Certification Specialist

Visiting Churchtown Dairy with Jennie and Jean-David.

Early this year, the Demeter team launched this newsletter to better connect and communicate with our certified businesses and others about the topics of Biodynamic farming and certification.    We hope it's been useful and interesting for our members to receive updates from the Demeter office, information on the latest research, and insights from other producers.

As we wrap up our last issue of the year, I am looking forward to exploring and sharing new topics in 2025.   In addition to continuing to delve into the thorniest issues in the Biodynamic Standards and read through the latest research on soil health, pest and disease control, and farm biodiversity in relation to Biodynamic practices, I hope to interview some of our farmers and business owners directly, and share some first-hand accounts with our readers.

Sustainable and small-scale agriculture of all forms thrives in an environment of sharing and networking around our innovations, ideas, and discoveries.  A rising tide lifts all boats, and small farms and businesses, lacking the support given to much larger operations, must work together to overcome the many obstacles to success.

Please use this newsletter, which reaches producers and consumers around the world, to share your stories, ideas, and what draws you to Biodynamic agriculture.  I am happy to schedule a conversation by phone or zoom this winter, when many of us have a little more time to dream about the growing season and exercise our creativity.   Please get in touch if you are interested:  [email protected]

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the New Year from all of us at Demeter!

This year, the Sustainable Foods Summit will focus on the future direction of regenerative agriculture and sustainability schemes. The Summit will bring together leading organizations involved in regenerative agriculture, sustainability schemes, and the organic products industry. Some key highlights at the upcoming event will be…

Defining regenerative agriculture. With varying interpretations and no formal definition, California is working to formally define regenerative agriculture for state policies and programs. Virginia Jameson from the California Department of Food & Agriculture will explain how it is coming up with the definition; a draft version is expected to be presented at the summit.

Regenerative agriculture standards & hurdles. In the absence of a universal definition, voluntary standards of regenerative agriculture are becoming popular. Paul Alvarez from the Regenerative Organic Alliance will give details of the ROC standard, stating its key pillars, adoption, and impact. Heidi Diestel, fourth generation farmer, will share her experiences in adopting Regenified certified regenerative agriculture practices raising turkeys.

Supply chains for regenerative organic ingredients. As the number of certified farms grows, the supply of ingredients from regenerative agriculture is increasing. Alex Heilman, Co-Founder of MAD Markets, will give details on how the company is building distribution infrastructure for such ingredients.

Organic market update & labels. The USDA Organic seal is well-established, however new labels are emerging. Linley Dixon, Co-Director at Real Organic Project, will give details of this farmer-led grassroots movement that requires soil grown crops and pasture raised livestock. Tom Chapman, Co-CEO of the Organic Trade Association, will present the latest market data and trends on the US organic food industry.

The Real Organic Project, Organic Trade Association, and Regenerative Organic Alliance will comprise a panel to discuss the future direction of organic labeling.

Adopting sustainability schemes. The number of sustainability schemes and eco-label options is increasing in the food industry, making it difficult for operators and consumers to choose. Brita Lundberg, Fourth-Generation Farmer and Chief Storyteller at Lundberg Family Farms, will speak about certification of its sustainable rice products. The family farm has adopted ROC, Non-GMO Project Verified, USDA Organic and other schemes. A leading natural food retailer will also give some insights into its preferred sustainability schemes.

Lara Burns from SPINS will speak about consumer behavior towards eco-labeled foods. What do American consumers look for in eco-labels? What are the motives to buy certified food products? What certification schemes are showing the highest growth?

Since 2009, the Sustainable Foods Summit has been covering major developments in sustainability and eco-labels in the food industry. The executive summit now takes place in the major geographic regions of the world: North & Latin America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific. The 15th North American edition of the Sustainable Foods Summit will take place in San Francisco on 22-23rd January 2025. More information and registration details are available from Sustainable Foods Summit 2025.

Demeter’s Director of Certification, Evrett Lunquist, will attend the Summit to network and share about the qualities found in farms and products with Biodynamic certification along with Demeter’s foundational role in the regenerative agricultural movement.
