About Senator Katrina Shealy

Image description

In March of  this year, VOICE members, Ellen Holliman and Carol Stigger had the privilege of meeting Senator Katrina Shealy after Ellen spoke at the SC House Subcommittee hearing on House Bill 3457. What struck us immediately was her sincerity, her strength, and her clear commitment to doing what’s right—especially for women in South Carolina.

Senator Shealy made national headlines in 2023 as one of the “Sister Senators”—a courageous, bipartisan group of five women who stood together in the South Carolina Senate to oppose a near-total abortion ban. Despite intense political pressure, they refused to back down. Their powerful voices, honesty, and unity inspired countless women across our state.

She paid a high price for that bravery. In 2024,Senator Shealy lost her seat in the Republican primary,a direct result of her advocacy for women’s health and reproductive rights. But she has never stopped speaking out.

Most recently, on October 1, 2025, Senator Shealy spokeout again—this time before the Senate Medical Affairs Committee, offering powerful testimony against Senate Bill 323,a deeply troubling bill that further restricts reproductive rights inSouth Carolina.

Her leadership continues to draw national attention. A documentary is currently in production highlighting the courage andconviction of the Sister Senators. It will tell the story of fivewomen who chose principle over party and truth over silence—and whoinspired a generation of women to do the same.

We are honored to welcome her to our VOICE luncheon on October20th, where she will share her story of courage, leadership, and conviction. We know you will leave inspired.

“We’re not going to fix a broken system by               breaking it further.”

Beyond the Headlines: Reclaiming America’s Soul

America was once a symbol of hope—a place where people from all over the world could come to build a new life, find opportunity, and achieve the great American dream. But in the face of growing violence, that dream feels like it’s fading. It’s a painful reality, and it leaves many of us w

ondering: what happened to the safe space we once called home?

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the constant reports of tragedy. The sheer number of murders in the last month is shocking, yet only a handful seem to get the media’s attention. Even then, those few are often politicized, turning human tragedy into talking points. The numbers speak for themselves: roughly 50 murders occur every day in the U.S., and this year alone, we’ve had 47 school shootings, resulting in eight deaths and nearly 90 injuries. These aren’t just statistics; they’re our neighbors, our children, our friends.

We, as a society, need to stop accepting this as the new normal. We can’t let the media’s sensationalism or the political noise dictate our response. It’s time to take a stand, not just against violence, but against the forces that seek to divide and silence us. The free exchange of ideas is what made this country great, but now it feels like censorship is becoming the new norm.

It’s time to move beyond the outrage and start demanding real change. Our leaders need to hear our voices, not just the ones filtered through the media. We have a responsibility to each other to foster a society based on empathy, understanding, and open dialogue. It’s the only way to heal the divides and reclaim the “American Dream” for future generations.

I named this blog While I Breathe from the South Carolina State motto, “While I Breathe, I Hope.” But, hope is not enough. We must also demand, insist, require and, of course, pray

We're so proud of the women of VOICE — and the conversations we’re having together.

We hope to see you on October 20th for what promises to be an inspiring luncheon with Senator Katrina Shealy. Until then, keep speaking up, supporting one another, and showing what a community of strong women can do.

With strength and solidarity,

Your VOICE Team
