JUNE NEWSLETTER

Help us build our Firewise Community Tool Library!

Image description

We are launching the Firewise Community Workday Program this June with the pilot community of Glenview. The goal of this program is to support Firewise communities in vital wildfire mitigation work such as zone zero clean up, vent retrofits, and more. We are gathering resources to extend the program across the region and we need your help building our Tool Library! We have created a MyRegistry listing all tools. We are accepting new items or gently used tools that you would like to donate. Please contact us at [email protected] for any questions or information!

Wildfire Extravaganza: A Success!

Image description

On May 17th, we hosted our First Annual Wildfire Extravaganza at the Malibu Forestry Unit! The event featured guided tours of the native garden, wildfire resilient demonstration home, and native plant nursery, along with activities such as a nature hike, screen printing, a pop-up lunch, and more.

It was a great success, and we’re excited to continue welcoming community members to experience the Wildfire Learning Center.

A sincere thank-you to all the incredible volunteers who made this event possible! Special thanks to our amazing partners who helped make this event possible: the Malibu Forestry Unit team, FORM LA, City of Malibu Office of Public Safety, Firewise Regional Coordinators, and Supervisor Horvath's Office.

GrizzlyCorps Updates - Take Action Today

Image description

On April 27th, nationwide funding cuts to AmeriCorps affected over 1,000 programs including GrizzlyCorps. After a roller coaster this past month, we have received word that our two GrizzlyCorps fellows and their cohort will be allowed to continue their service term through July as members of UC Berkeley's GrizzlyCorps program independent of the National AmeriCorps program.

This does not mean that the fight is over, as GrizzlyCorps will have to search for additional funding to run next year’s fellowship. Read this BayNature article about the impact on GrizzlyCorps. If you feel called to, please email your elected officials and let them know how important AmeriCorps programs are.
