The photo above captures a (rare) moment of bliss I experienced dancing solo in the contrasting light of Sans Soleil (get it?) in Montreal - the come-down of a chaotic first week of September. When the DJ spun Deep Dish's eponymous edit of Sandy B's "Make The World Go Round," it was the balm I needed for a relentless 10 months. I could have stayed there forever, but had a train to catch the next morning as home beckoned.
Glass slipper pumpkin stuff, you know? Moments like these are solid reminders, and portals into experiences new and old. (And yes, this month's newsletter title is indeed a Type O Negative reference). September Spins:
- Debut DJ gigs in Montreal (La Sala Rossa) & Detroit (SPKRBOX) -some quality time with family - and new friends - in both cities!
- Working with an incredible Brazilian-Canadian artist to produce the liner notes + publicity assets for their new album - stay tuned.
- Announced The Hustle's 10th anniversary concert (part 2) - Oct. 16!
- Had a solid chat with Nia Nadurata for The Fold on Frisson - listen.
- New episode of Sound Travels w. Jodie Dewald - amazing friend, DJ, owner of one of the best, The Little Jerry. Listen here + read here.
- Sonic Fold is co-presenting Cumbia Algorítmica - a workshop on Oct. 18 part of Alucine Film Fest - where Latin rhythms meet digital creativity - learn more and register for free here.

Creative Communications ~ Reflection of the Month ~ |

I believe praise should be given when and where due - and it doesn't hurt to uplift people 'just because' sometimes. This also goes for people doing the grassroots work - that have been doing the work from time. On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, I attended a 16mm screening of the 1968 film, The Ballad of Crowfoot, directed by Mi'kmaq singer-songwriter, film director and politician, Willie Dunn, paired with the 1972 Martin Defalco film, Cold Journey, at Revue Cinema in Toronto. While I had previously viewed both via the National Film Board of Canada's archive a few years ago, this time was special. The screenings were followed by a Q&A with my friend, DJ, journalist, archivist, producer (and beyond!), Kevin Howes, Dunn's son, Lawrence, artist Bob Robb and special guests including friends and family. Meaningful stories, sobering truths and powerful reflections where shared. We need more moments of listening and connecting while absorbing influential and integral works. And space to champion those that have paved the way.*
*amongst a long list that makes one a progenitor, I'd like to note that The Ballad of Crowfoot is referred to as Canada's first music video* Sonic Fold, The Fold Podcast and Sound Travel are collectively built on a foundation of uplifting others by way of providing a platform for someone to share ideas, thoughts and reflections - mostly of self, but also of the bigger picture, their passions and intentions. It will celebrate birthday #8 soon - a number and symbol infinite and cyclical. I do my best to weave a thread of connection between storytelling and understanding our communal relationship with music. I intend to grow the platform further so it can better serve those featured, who we collaborate with and the community at large. What do film screenings and podcasts all have in common? Maybe a little, maybe a lot! I just wanted to express gratitude for strong communication - be it visual, sonic, energetic - and what I've learned from others that simply do the thing, and do it with feeling. |
