 Policy analysis

As the EU prepares its Sustainable Tourism Strategy for 2026, closer links are emerging between tourism policy, international cultural relations and the external ambitions of the Culture Compass for Europe.

In this latest blog, we explore how participatory governance of rural heritage along a forgotten pilgrimage route in Tamil Nadu can transform cultural landscapes into engines of regional development and foster meaningful cultural partnerships between Europe and India.

 Policy analysis

As Montenegro moves forward in its EU accession process, cultural relations with Turkey are increasingly influenced by memory, identity and mobility governance. In our latest article, we explore how cultural exchanges intersect with contested histories and geopolitical alignment in the Western Balkans, highlighting the need for more critical, coherent and trust-based European cultural relations frameworks in accession contexts.

 Space for dialogue

The second episode of the Composing Green miniseries, recorded in 2023 by Damien Helly, explores the links between agroforestry, science and artistic practice within broader debates on climate, biodiversity and rural transformation. Featuring Maya Marshak, Patrick Worms, Francesca Camilli and Zayaan Khan, the episode presents agroforestry as both an environmental approach and a form of cultural heritage, highlighting how transdisciplinary dialogue can foster deeper understanding and support behavioural change at the climate–culture nexus.

Why So Many MIT Students Are Writing Poetry

An essay by a literature professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology that explores a surprising creative movement on campus, where science and engineering students are increasingly gathering to write and share poetry. It looks at how these students balance rigorous technical study with a deep engagement in verse, forming collectives and using poetry to reflect on human expression, emotion, and the role of creativity in an age dominated by technology and AI. The piece also considers poetry’s enduring value as a form of memory, connection and originality in contrast with algorithmic prediction.

Bellezza e Bruttezza

This is an art exhibition that explores how artists from Italy and Northern Europe in the late 15th and 16th centuries depicted the extremes of beauty and ugliness—from refined ideals to deliberate grotesques. By juxtaposing works from Renaissance masters, the exhibition traces how changing aesthetic tastes shaped visual culture and how concepts of the beautiful and the ugly were intertwined and reimagined across regions and time. It highlights art’s power to reveal cultural values, contrast ideals and challenge perceptions through striking visual dialogue.
