April News from Knit & Spin

Hello Fiber Friends!

April is here, and with it comes the transition from dreary Winter to something that starts to look like Spring! April is a busy time around the farm, particularly where fiber arts are concerned. Lambing and shearing often happen around this time of year. We at Knit & Spin thought it might be fun to take a look at where the fiber we all love gets its start—from sheep to skein!

Before your yarn ever reaches your needles or hook, it starts on the farm. Spring shearing is essential for the health of the sheep and marks the beginning of the fiber cycle. Sheep are shorn once a year, usually in Spring. Then the fleece is cleaned, carded, and spun into yarn. Are you interested in trying your hand at any of these activities? Knit & Spin has raw wool as well as wool wash. We can get you “hooked” up with all the supplies you need!

Another cool thing happening this month is Earth Day (April 22)! There’s nothing more sustainable than making something by hand. This month, we’re highlighting all-natural, sustainable fibers like cotton, wool, bamboo, and hemp. We recommend making something lightweight for seasonally cool mornings. Don’t want to make another shawl? What about a market bag to take with you on trips to the farmer’s market? Or perhaps a stash-busting project? Sustainability can also mean using the scraps and fibers you already have that don’t quite match anything else.

I know, you’re thinking we can’t possibly have any other cool news to share…. HA! You’d be wrong again! On April 3rd the 2026 Malabrigo KAL (Knit-a-Long) kicks off. This year the special pattern is the Orienta Shawl! Originally written for Mechita by Cory Boberg, this time we’re reimagining it in Malabrigo Sock to highlight its drape, stitch definition, and — especially — the depth of our newest hues from the Aura Collection. We have physical copies of the pattern in the shop where you can pick up the yarn for this cozy knit.

If you thought we were done, guess again! April 25th is LYS (Local Yarn Shop) Day! If you aren’t familiar with LYS day, it celebrates independent fiber shops and encourages people to shop local. Participating shops usually offer special sales and exclusive products. LYS day is a perfect time to grab something special and support local business at the same time.

The Knit and Spin is also excited to announce that we’ll be participating in the West Michigan Yarn Quest for 2026. We couldn’t get on the list in time for 2025. WMYQ takes place June 18th through the 27th. There are TEN shops participating this year. If you get your passport stamped at all participating shops and turn it in afterwards, you’ll get in the drawing for a grand prize!

Speaking of the shop, we have news there too! First off, did you know that we have an online store and a website? It’s true! Not only can you shop our whole selection online, but we’ll ship it right to your door! You can find our website by clicking on the following link :)

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL!

The Knit and Spin has yet more exciting news! We’re Moving! Don’t worry, it’s not far! In fact, it’s just across the street and a couple buildings down the road. The plan is not to be closed for more than a couple days so hopefully we’ll be opened back up for all of you Tuesday May, 5th.

We’ve spent the last few months looking for just the right location. We needed more space for more yarn, and looms, and spinning wheels, all the things everyone loves. We’re working with a local interior designer Lisa Wall, and we have such cool plans for the new space. We can’t wait for you to see it. “See” isn’t quite strong enough… We can’t wait for you to EXPERIENCE it.

Here’s how you can help. It’s true that the shop is only moving across the street. However, we still don’t want to transfer all of our product…. I know, I know, we can do hard things… We were thinking of having a store moving sale! The details are yet to be untangled but as soon as we know more, so will you. Keep an eye on our social media pages and we’ll do our best to get the moving sale announced as soon as possible. After all, what good is having a brand new space if you’re filling it back up with the same yarn?!?

Lastly, to get you in the spirit of spring, here’s a free pattern from Ravelry for a sunflower scrunchie we think you’ll love!
