Newsletter of May

May was a special month for us, since it was very diverse and busy. A big portion of our time went into the recruitment of our new team, with the interviews taking up many hours of the team. Next to that, we are in extensive contact with our technical partners to make sure our deadlines are met. Keep reading for all the details!

Networking

BMW Roadshow

Image description

We had the pleasure to stand at the BMW roadshow from Oostland Motorrad, where we could talk to all of the motor enthousiasts of Enschede! At our bike reveal, we will invite them over to showcase all of their finest model bikes!

Saxion Business Days

During the Saxion Business Days, we formed an inviting front to all of the students at Saxion in front of the entrance. We talked to a lot of students who were interested in the possibilities of their future. Thanks to Saxion for this opportunity!

Teamweekend

Image description

At the start of this month, we had our team weekend. We swapped the office and workshop for the Belgian Ardennes, where we had the chance to recharge and strengthen our bond as a team after a few busy weeks.

During this weekend, we had a mountainbike trip through the Achouffe region with a collective hangover, we canoed along the local rivers and calmed down at the end of the evenings with a relaxing barbecue. It was the perfect mix of relaxation, team bonding and activities. Even though we had some unexpected car problems on the way back, everyone made it back to Enschede!

After a successful weekend, the team returned the very next day to continue full-time development in Enschede, with stronger team spirit than ever!

Technical update

The production phase is well under way, with more and more components coming in. The aluminium tubes for the frame that came in last month, were laser cut into the appropriate sizes. Many parts of the bike also need to be milled, we not only do this ourselves at UT, but also let parts be done at our partner NTS.

The weldmolds for the frame, battery pack, and swingarm were also brought to our welding partner so they can start with welding it together. Our new 3D printer has also been working overtime to print the cellholders for the modules of our battery pack. It has a huge printbed of 50x50x50 cm, and will also be responsible for printing our cooling tank.

The subframe is also making big steps. All the parts of the positive model were 3D printed, and we are preparing to lay the first layer of flax fibre. It is really interesting and fun to see all the parts coming together!

On the powertrain side of things, a lot of things have happened in different fields. We, for example, tested our cells with the robotic arm battery tester at the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform right around the corner. We have also started spotwelding our battery pack together there.

On the PCB side, we have finished the (hopefully final) iterations of the Battery Management Unit and Cell Monitoring Unit. The orders are out at our PCB provider, and we are planning to assemble them next week. The software side is also working hard to implement our new Inertial Measurement Unit to accurately measure data like the lean angle of Nexus-TR.

Additionally, we are not only working on a hardware overhaul of our Battery Management System, but also a redesign of the software. We have assembled a small test battery to improve our balancing strategy, and this is showing great progress. Next month, we hope to start testing with our actual new BMS hardware and continue with spotwelding the first module of our battery pack. Exciting times!

This month's partners in the spotlight

Bossard

When building a high performance electric superbike, you want to focus entirely on engineering and assembly without worrying about missing hardware. That is why we are incredibly happy to have Bossard supporting our workshop with a fully stocked cabinet of high quality nuts, bolts, and fasteners.

Whenever a bin runs low, we can easily get a replenishment to keep our supplies topped up. Thank you, Bossard, for providing the essential hardware that keeps our team and our bike perfectly put together!

Demcon

Demcon supports us in several ways. Most notably, they provide consultancy hours with their engineers. Their knowledge and expertise help us make important improvements to our electric racing motorcycle.

Thank you, Demcon, for supporting our team and helping us push innovation forward!

Recruitment of EST10

Since all our applications for the team of next year were in at the start of the month, we took our time to talk to all our applicants and see how we can construct our next team in the best way possible. This resulted in a big puzzle for us to solve and communicating together with the applicants how we can provide the best possible experience for the upcoming EST members. On the 1st of June all applicants will be called by us, and we will be assembling EST 10.0!

A glance into the future

Production Deadline

Coming month is the time of our production deadline! This is not yet the time for a fully assembled Nexus-TR, but it is the time that all individual components are done and lying in the workshop ready to be assembled. We will take you along our journey, so keep an eye out for our socials for more updates!
