ChatGPT Losing AI Grip to Gemini

According to Similarweb’s 2026 Generative AI Landscape report, ChatGPT’s share of worldwide generative AI web traffic has dropped from 76% a year ago to around 53% today. Gemini is the biggest beneficiary, rising from under 9% to around 27–28% of traffic over the same period. Claude moved from barely 2% to close to 9%.

Google Itself Is The Destination?

According to Similarweb’s 2026 Generative AI Landscape report and reviewed by TechCrunch, Google AI Overviews now appear in 43% of searches - up from 15% last year. Meanwhile, monthly visits to Google's conversational AI Mode jumped from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026.

TechCrunch suggests Google is evolving from a traditional gateway of blue links into a primary content destination itself, synthesizing answers directly from the websites it indexes.

arXivLabs: AI Summaries Are 'Broadly' Accurate.

New research from arXiv suggests AI summarizers are broadly accurate.

After analysing 13,777 news articles and their 41,331 summaries generated in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Perplexity Comet, the researchers found that an average AI-generated summary of a news article is 82.8% accurate, with errors mostly stemming from imprecise wording or supplementary context.

The research also found that AI summarizers consistently reduce political bias and negative affect in news articles.

They suggest AI-powered browsers are now a new class of “editorial intermediaries” that systematically reshape news, with implications for democratic discourse and AI governance.
