High Cliff Fun League

Enjoying the fun and frustration of golf while not taking ourselves too seriously.

Fun League Aug 11 Results - Aug 18 Info

This update is coming out a bit earlier than usual for I will be out of town this weekend. Thankfully all teams have played so the week is complete.

A warm night with not much wind. Another one in the books are we head down the home stretch with only three weeks left in the 2nd Half. A lot of movement in the standings this week with some big jumps by a couple of teams. Still anyone's game out there with eight teams within ten points of the top. Should be a great finish!

Pizza scheduled for 9/1. We should have enough to have some extra pizza or food/prizes the last week on 9/8.

Remaining Schedule Updated

I have filled out the remaining part of the schedule. I tried to re-use the weeks at the beginning part of the schedule, with teams playing the opposite nine holes. I was mostly successful with that. I also made a couple of swaps so no teams should be playing each other three times. Please let me know of any questions.

Image description

This week we are going to have a change of pace for this story is just too crazy not to share. Maybe you've heard about it already.

This happened during a Member-Member outing at a club just outside of St Louis. Well, here's the full story from MyGolfSpy - Link. I have the main part below...

Zach Holland, a 2-handicap who played college golf at the NAIA level, was forced to resign his membership after faking a hole-in-one on the fourth hole of the event.

Playing in the first group off in the tournament, Holland’s round began normally. His group played the first three holes together.

But as the group was finishing the third hole, Holland told them he needed to take a phone call concerning his terminally ill grandmother. He had mentioned on the first tee there was a possibility this could happen.

To keep up with the pace of play, Holland went up and hit his tee shot at the par-3 fourth prior to his group getting there. Then he took the brief phone call before reuniting with his group at the green.

When he got to the green, Holland said he told his partners that he thinned his tee shot but did not see where the ball ended up.

The group then found the ball in the cup, assumed Holland made a hole-in-one and everyone went crazy.

It was believable enough, right? Holland is a good player and making a hole-in-one is a reasonable thing that could have happened.

But with significant money on the line in the form of a “hole-in-one pot”—and the fact Holland made the ace without witnesses—everyone involved was a little suspicious. Holland kept up the charade, insisting he made the hole-in-one. His group had discovered the ball in the hole together, after all.

No worries, there are security cameras! The superintendent grabbed the footage and the debate would be settled in short order.

Uh-oh. That was not good news for Holland.

The footage showed Holland parked his car near the fourth green an hour before his tee time. He had manually created a ball mark, placed the ball in the hole and then driven back to the clubhouse.

The jig was up. He immediately owned up to the scheme and resigned his membership.

Curling Club

Golf Outing 8/29

A shameless plug for the upcoming Fox Cities Curling Golf Outing! That is the sister organization to the Appleton Curling Club of which I am the president and four people from our golf league are members (and another is a sub). We are looking for a few players to fill out a team. If interested let me know!

More info can be found here - link.

Curling Club Info

The past couple of weeks some have expressed interest in giving curling a try and/or coming on down to the club during the season to watch. Both are excellent ideas and happy to provide more info!

For those interested in giving it a try we usually host a couple "Learn to Curl" sessions just before our season starts. That should be the last week of Oct. I will try to send something out to the league. The club's facebook page should have the info as well - Link.

During the season, which is Nov-March, the public is welcome to come and watch. We also have a bar with tap beer along with many selections in cans as well. Our main leagues play at 5:45 and 8:00 pm M-Th. Pretty much every night someone from the golf league is likely playing. I'm happy to try to set up a day for us to try to get together.

ScoreCards

If you are playing your round at a different time, please send your opponent (and me) a picture of your scorecard. Appreciate those that have done so already this season. I would not give it to anyone working in the pub for they have been misplaced in the past. There is a bulletin board as you enter the pub from the pro shop that has our Schedule & Standings sheet. Feel free to slip your scorecard into that holder. There used to be a folder to place cards into, but it seems that was removed after last season.

FYI - It seems that if you try to play only the Back Nine on the weekend, the course permits that one weekend a month. Please be aware of that, or plan to play 18 that day.

Misc

Good luck to all this week!

Wrap-Up

That's it for now. Please let me know of any questions.
