A MUNICIPAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN IS ABOUT TO GET UNDERWAY!

Working in partnership with local groups and networks across northern Ontario, We the Nuclear Free North has developed a set of backgrounders and questions for candidates in the current municipal elections in Ontario.

Here's how it can work for you and your municipality:

Let We the Nuclear Free North that you will canvas candidates in your municipality; please use the form HERE to do that
We the Nuclear Free North can tailor the candidates survey to your local campaign (add your logo, your contact information etc.) at your request
Use the backgrounders and the online survey to ask the candidates questions (see below)
Reach out to candidates by email or in person and ask them to complete the online survey
Share the questions and backgrounders with fellow residents
Encourage your fellow residents to raise these questions when candidates come to the door, call voters at home, and during all-candidates meetings
Publicize the results through a media release, social media, or posters

How can I get involved?

What will I be doing during this campaign?

There are two questions for each candidate to answer. We need volunteers to contact the candidates and ask them to respond.

How do I contact the candidates?

Check your municipality's web site and if you don't find it there contact the municipal clerk.

What do I do with the responses?

You can share the results through the media, social media, or posters. And keep the results for follow up during the next term of office.

What kind of help will I get?

If more than one person replies from the same community we will connect the volunteers. And you'll have backup from WTNFN through emails, phone contact, and the option of being part of a bi-weekly zoom call of campaign volunteers across northern Ontario.

Why are we doing this?

It's important to raise the issues around nuclear waste transportation and burial at every opportunity. Municipalities are important voices, and by informing candidates and hearing from them we are setting the stage for future work with the incoming municipal council.

CONTINUED ACTION ALERT: NWMO's Nuclear Waste Transportation and Burial Plan Could be “Pre-Approved”

On June 24th three federal Ministers lined up to announce that it had referred three projects to the Major Project Office to consider the potential “listing” under the Build Canada Act (aka Bill C-5). That’s a bit cryptic, but what it means is that these projects – if listed – would in essence be pre-approved. As the Minsters’ statement put it, this would mean “shifting Canada’s regulatory focus from ‘whether’ … to ‘how.”
Shockingly, one of these projects is the NWMO's extremely controversial plan to transport, process, bury and abandon all of Canada’s high-level nuclear waste at the Revell site in northwestern Ontario.

NWMO's plan includes 2-3 trucks per day hauling the waste for thousands of kilometres and radioactive waste that will remain hazardous for one million years.

There are no other operating deep geological repositories for nuclear fuel waste anywhere in the world – and the plan is still largely conceptual, with many parts of the operation not yet designed.
